MANCHESTER, England — Ruben Amorim has been dismissed as Manchester United manager after 14 months in charge, the Premier League club announced Monday.
The decision came a day after Amorim made comments questioning his role following a 1-1 draw with Leeds. Manchester United is currently sixth in the Premier League.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change,” the club said in a statement. Youth coach Darren Fletcher will lead the team against Burnley on Wednesday.
Amorim oversaw last season’s 15th-place finish, the club’s lowest in the Premier League era, and recorded the highest number of losses and lowest points total in a single season. He was the sixth permanent manager or coach to leave the club since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
Last week, reports emerged that club officials had questioned Amorim’s tactics. On Sunday, he said he intended to remain in his role until a replacement was appointed.
