Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, a stalwart Democratic Congresswoman from Texas, has died at the age of 74. Lee’s family shared the news on X, expressing their profound grief and gratitude for her life and service.
“Today, with incredible grief for our loss yet deep gratitude for the life she shared with us, we announce the passing of U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee of the 18th Congressional District of Texas. A fierce champion of the people, she was affectionately and simply known as ‘Congresswoman’ by her constituents in recognition of her near-ubiquitous presence and service to their daily lives for more than 30 years,” the statement read.
In June, Lee revealed that she had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Despite the diagnosis, she remained optimistic about her treatment plan. “I am confident that my doctors have developed the best possible plan to target my specific disease,” Lee stated at the time. “The road ahead will not be easy, but I stand in faith that God will strengthen me.”
Serving since 1995, Jackson Lee represented Texas’ 18th District in the House of Representatives for 15 terms. She was a dedicated member of the House Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget Committees, as well as the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.
Even after her diagnosis, Jackson Lee showed no intention of stepping down. In her June statement, she emphasized her commitment to her role, stating she was “committed to working with our Congressional leadership including Leader Hakeem Jefferies and the Speaker of the House to serve this nation and be present for votes on legislation that is critical for the prosperity and security of the American people.”
Jackson Lee’s passing marks the end of a notable career in public service, characterized by her unwavering dedication to her constituents and her impactful presence in Congress.
