SPLENDORA — The nonprofit animal rescue organization This is Houston will open a free vaccine and microchip clinic in Splendora, Texas, next year, officials announced. The clinic will also provide low-cost spay and neuter services for pets in the area.
The facility will occupy nearly four acres and include a four-bay structure where pet owners can remain in their vehicles while animals receive vaccinations, microchips, and dewormers. A nearby building will host spay and neuter surgeries, which require only a small deposit to reserve a space.
The services will primarily serve pet owners in Cleveland, where This is Houston began outreach efforts in 2021. Co-founder Tom Heller said many dogs in the area remain unvaccinated and reproduce rapidly. The organization seeks to prevent unnecessary animal deaths through vaccination and population control.
From 2021 to 2024, the organization operated pop-up clinics in Cleveland, vaccinating and spaying or neutering thousands of dogs. Officials said the permanent clinic will provide consistent access to these services. Montgomery County was selected for the site to ensure access to animal control and the county shelter to support abandoned pets. Liberty County plans a shelter, but no construction or funding for animal control officers has started.
Clinic services will initially focus on Cleveland residents, with potential expansion to other zip codes as demand dictates. Construction is expected to finish by the end of the year, with services set to begin in spring or summer.
