FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida — Lionel Messi made history on Wednesday, becoming the first player in Major League Soccer history to win back-to-back Most Valuable Player awards.
The 38-year-old Inter Miami captain earned the honor following a standout season in which he led the club to the MLS Cup title.
League officials said Messi was selected by media, players, and club representatives based on his performance, including leading Inter Miami in goals and assists and helping the team finish with the league’s best record.
Inter Miami executives hailed Messi as the central figure in their championship run and noted that his arrival boosted global attention on MLS, increasing attendance, merchandise sales, and international broadcasts.
MLS confirmed that the MVP trophy will be formally presented to Messi at a ceremony in Fort Lauderdale before a home match, with teammates, club officials, and fans invited. Voting breakdowns from media, players, and club ballots will be released to show his margin of victory over other finalists.
The club said it will continue building its roster and playing style around Messi for the upcoming season, while leveraging his back-to-back MVP milestone in promotional campaigns, ticketing, and merchandise efforts.
