Lamar Jackson backs down in No. 8 trademark dispute with Troy Aikman

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has officially withdrawn his trademark opposition against former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) confirmed on Aug. 15.

Jackson initially filed the dispute in July 2024, challenging Aikman’s use of the number “8” on apparel branded with the term “EIGHT.”

Jackson’s legal team argued that Aikman’s trademarks could cause consumer confusion with Jackson’s own brand, Era 8 Apparel, which features the number 8 prominently and has sought related trademark protections.

Aikman’s trademarks cover various merchandise categories, including apparel and bags, and are connected to his business ventures such as his beer company, which uses “Eight” branding. Despite Jackson’s withdrawal, Aikman’s legal team did not consent to the challenge’s dismissal.

Jackson’s association with the number 8 stems from his jersey number with the Ravens and is central to his business identity beyond football. This is not Jackson’s first legal effort to protect his brand from potential infringement or confusion in the sports merchandise market.

Neither Jackson nor Aikman has issued a public statement regarding the withdrawal or the outcome of the dispute.
