MANILA, Philippines — The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) on Friday criticized the planned increase in terminal fees at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and urged the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to implement a 50% discount on train fares for minimum wage earners.
Under the proposal, the international terminal fee will rise from PHP 550 to PHP 950, while the domestic terminal fee will increase from PHP 200 to PHP 390. TUCP representatives raised concerns about the impact of the fee hike on ordinary workers and questioned the DOTr’s priorities.
TUCP called for public consultations before implementing the new rates to ensure that pricing decisions consider the welfare of low-income commuters. The group said the fare discount would help offset the rising cost of transportation and provide relief to minimum wage earners.
The DOTr has not issued a formal response to TUCP’s statement as of press time.
