HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A Harris County judge set bond at $800,000 Wednesday for a Houston funeral home director accused of posing as the spouse of a deceased man in an alleged scheme to steal an estate valued at more than $2 million.
State District Judge Hazel B. Jones set the bond on five felony charges during a court hearing. The defendant, Unique Green, also identified in court records as Michael Green, did not appear. Green is scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.
Green was arrested Tuesday by the Harris County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office on charges of theft, forgery and tampering with government records.
Investigators allege Green falsely claimed to be the spouse of the late Lawrence Gammon in an attempt to take control of Gammon’s estate, valued at nearly $2.2 million. According to Gammon’s family, Green had no prior relationship with the deceased before they hired him to handle funeral arrangements.
Authorities also accuse Green of submitting fraudulent documents to the Texas Funeral Service Commission to obtain a funeral director and embalmer license. Investigators allege Green then operated A Community Funeral Home without a valid license.
The criminal case remains under investigation.
