WASHINGTON, D.C. — A federal judge on Monday issued a temporary injunction preventing the Trump administration from cutting federal funding to several sanctuary cities and counties across the United States.
The legal challenge centers on the Trump administration’s executive order aimed at withholding federal grants from jurisdictions that do not fully comply with federal immigration enforcement.
Sanctuary cities, which adopt policies to protect undocumented immigrants by restricting local cooperation with immigration authorities, argue the funding cuts violate their rights under the Tenth Amendment.
Several cities and counties, including New York, Chicago, and San Francisco, filed lawsuits claiming the administration exceeded its authority and that funding cuts would harm local operations, such as law enforcement.
The judge’s decision temporarily blocks enforcement of the funding cuts until further court proceedings.
