MANILA, Philippines– Juan Ponce Enrile, a longtime figure in Philippine politics, died on Thursday, November 13, at the age of 101.
His death ended a career that spanned decades and several administrations.
Enrile served as Minister of National Defense and Senate President. He played a key role during the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos and helped implement martial law in 1972.
In 1986, Enrile joined the People Power Revolution, which removed Marcos from office and restored democratic rule.
Throughout his career, Enrile faced accusations of corruption and human rights violations. Despite these, he continued to serve in government and remained active in public affairs.
Lawmakers and public officials expressed condolences to his family and noted his long service in government.
