George Russell said Max Verstappen tried to assert dominance when they collided in Spain two weeks ago, but the attempt backfired.

Ahead of the 10th round in Montreal, the Mercedes driver told reporters he didn’t believe Verstappen, a four-time world champion, deliberately tried to ram him. Russell joked that Verstappen was trying to show who was boss but got it wrong, referencing Verstappen’s father’s nickname.

Verstappen received three penalty points and was demoted from fifth to 10th place, putting him one point away from a mandatory race ban. The incident remained a major talking point at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, where the two drivers could race closely again.

After the race, Verstappen admitted his move was wrong, but Russell said he wasn’t seeking an apology. He noted that Verstappen’s actions ultimately cost the Dutchman and benefited him. Russell appreciated that Verstappen took responsibility for the incident, which he found surprising.

Russell also said Verstappen likely tried to intimidate him but misjudged, as it didn’t have the intended effect. He added that he plans to race normally in Montreal and won’t give Verstappen any extra space despite the potential suspension threat.

The two drivers briefly spoke at the airport before Russell attended the French Open final in Paris, where Verstappen was with his newborn daughter.

Earlier, Russell expressed concern about Verstappen’s aggressive driving influencing younger racers, to which Verstappen humorously responded he’d “bring some tissues” next time. Russell found the exchange amusing.
