MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) on Sunday mourned the passing of Jimmy Mariano, a former Olympian, PBA player, and championship-winning coach, who died at age 84.
The league held a moment of silence before the Philippine Cup game between Rain or Shine and Converge as players, officials, and fans paid tribute to his legacy.
The PBA confirmed Mariano’s death in a statement Sunday night but did not disclose the cause. Pregame activities were paused as players from both teams stood at center court and fans bowed their heads in respect.
Mariano played in the PBA during its early years before transitioning to coaching, where he led a team to a league title. He also represented the Philippines in the Olympic Games, earning recognition for his role in advancing Philippine basketball during its shift from amateur to professional play.
The league extended condolences to Mariano’s family and said it would coordinate with them on potential additional tributes. Former teammates, players coached by Mariano, and basketball organizations nationwide also expressed sympathy and remembered his contributions to the sport.
The PBA noted it would continue to honor Mariano’s impact on Philippine basketball in future events and publications while maintaining its ongoing Philippine Cup schedule.
