Jia De Guzman, captain of Alas Pilipinas, is calling for a better national system that supports volleyball players’ growth, welfare, and careers.
In a statement, De Guzman said athletes should not be forced to choose between playing for the national team and continuing their professional careers in the Premier Volleyball League. She stressed the need for a system where both can develop together, as seen in other countries.
Her remarks come amid concerns over player welfare, including delayed salaries and a proposed rookie draft. The Philippine National Volleyball Federation has since sought a meeting with the team to address these issues, acknowledging some payment delays due to administrative problems.
Other players have also voiced frustrations online, calling for better financial support and proper rest periods. Despite the issues, De Guzman emphasized staying focused on building a stronger future for Filipino volleyball and protecting the welfare of athletes.
