Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas has filed to run for the United States Senate.

She submitted her candidacy paperwork on the final day allowed under Texas law, shortly after Rep. Colin Allred withdrew from the Democratic primary for the same seat.

Crockett represents Texas’s 30th Congressional District, covering parts of Dallas and surrounding areas. She won her House seat in the 2022 midterm elections. Her entry launches her into a statewide contest to determine the Democratic candidate who will face the Republican incumbent in November.

Allred had been considered a leading Democratic contender in the Senate primary. He suspended his campaign hours before Crockett filed her paperwork. His withdrawal changed the dynamics of the race and opened space for new entrants.

Crockett previously served in the Texas House of Representatives and has a background in civil rights law. Her platform focuses on voting rights, criminal justice issues, and economic equity. Her Senate bid moves her from a safely Democratic district to a statewide electorate that has favored Republicans in recent cycles.

Texas has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1988. The seat Crockett seeks is a key target for national Democrats. Strategists note the state’s large and diverse electorate and the cost of a competitive campaign.

Crockett’s filing met the required deadline for placement on the Democratic primary ballot. State election officials will verify her eligibility. The Democratic primary will determine the party’s nominee to face the Republican candidate. Other candidates who submitted paperwork before the deadline may also appear on the ballot.
