MANILA, Philippines—Gilas Pilipinas has added forward Jamie Malonzo and center Geo Chiu to its men’s basketball roster for the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand next month, officials confirmed Monday.
The additions come after the coaching staff ruled out naturalized player Justin Brownlee due to eligibility concerns. Malonzo, formerly of Barangay Ginebra in the PBA, fills a wing and forward rotation spot, while Chiu, currently with Abra in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League, strengthens the team’s frontcourt.
Team management said both players were selected from the national pool based on recent performances, fitness, and positional needs, and are expected to integrate quickly into team preparations.
Gilas Pilipinas will begin full practices in Metro Manila before flying to Thailand, where it will face regional teams including Indonesia, Vietnam, and the host nation. Officials expect Malonzo to contribute on the perimeter and in transition, while Chiu will focus on interior defense, rebounding, and pick-and-roll plays.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) said it continues to coordinate with leagues and clubs to secure player releases and will announce the final roster once SEA Games organizers confirm accreditation.
