Italian orienteering athlete Mattia Debertolis died on August 12 after collapsing during the men’s middle-distance final at the World Games in Chengdu, China.
The 29-year-old collapsed on August 8 while competing in the event held in temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius.
Organizers and the International Orienteering Federation confirmed that Debertolis was found unconscious and received medical attention but did not recover.
The World Games took place amid intense heat conditions.
