Israel launched airstrikes in Gaza early Wednesday after two Israeli soldiers were shot and killed near the Gaza border.
Israeli officials said they hold Hamas responsible for the attack, though investigators have not confirmed the identities or motive of the shooters.
The Israeli military said its aircraft struck Hamas compounds and weapon manufacturing sites. After the attack on the soldiers, an Israeli security official announced that aid deliveries into Gaza were halted “until further notice.”
Gaza has been under an Israeli blockade since 2007 and faces recurring shortages of electricity, water and medical supplies. Aid groups warned that the suspension of aid could worsen conditions for civilians.
The strikes and aid cutoff test the ceasefire brokered with help from Egypt and Qatar after an 11-day conflict. The United Nations urged both sides to show restraint and follow international humanitarian law.
Israeli officials said the measures aim to prevent further attacks. Hamas has not released a statement on the reported killing of the soldiers. Israeli forces remain on alert along the Gaza border.
