The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that the 2025 tax filing season will officially begin on January 27, marking the first day taxpayers can submit returns for the 2024 fiscal year.

The IRS anticipates receiving over 140 million individual tax returns by the April 15 deadline.

Taxpayers are encouraged to file early to expedite refunds, with electronic filing and direct deposit highlighted as the fastest methods.

The IRS has introduced system improvements and resources under its “Get Ready” campaign, aimed at simplifying the filing process and providing clear guidance for taxpayers.

The filing deadline for individual tax returns remains April 15, consistent with previous years. As this date falls on a Tuesday in 2025, no extensions due to weekends or holidays are expected.

Taxpayers needing additional time can request an extension, giving them until October 15 to file. However, the IRS reminds taxpayers that extensions apply only to filing, not to payment of taxes owed, which must be paid by April 15 to avoid penalties and interest.

The IRS also unveiled Direct File, a new tool available in 25 states, allowing taxpayers to electronically submit returns directly through the IRS. This feature aims to streamline the filing process and improve user experience.

Taxpayers are advised to review updates to tax credits and deductions, including changes to the child tax credit and other adjustments that could impact their returns. The IRS encourages the use of its Free File program for eligible taxpayers seeking no-cost filing options.

As the season progresses, the IRS will provide additional updates and resources. Taxpayers are encouraged to monitor the IRS website for the latest information and support tools to ensure accurate and timely submissions.
