SAN ANTONIO, Texas– A 28-year-old inmate died Friday morning after experiencing a medical episode at the Bexar County Jail, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 9:15 a.m., the inmate’s cellmate alerted a deputy that he was unresponsive and in need of medical attention. The deputy administered Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, but officials said it had no effect. Additional life-saving measures were performed by responding staff until medical personnel arrived and took over care.

Despite those efforts, the inmate was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been booked into the jail the previous day.

According to officials, the inmate had been showing signs of withdrawal from a controlled substance. Preliminary findings suggest the death may have resulted from a medical episode compounded by withdrawal symptoms. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death.

The inmate’s identity has not yet been released, pending next-of-kin notification.

This marks the third in-custody death reported at Bexar County Jail in 2025.
