Iconic Houston FunPlex auctioning ferris wheel and more as it closes

FunPlex is auctioning off everything within its 200,000 square foot facility after closing down for good.

Houston’s cherished indoor theme park, FunPlex, closed its doors last August, marking the end of an era filled with cherished childhood memories. However, enthusiasts now have a unique opportunity to own a piece of this iconic venue. With the right financial resources and enough space, you can take home some of FunPlex’s distinctive attractions.

Originally closed with plans for renovation, the Alief-based park was instead acquired by Houston developer Brett Miles of 13700 DATA LLC. The new ownership plans to repurpose the nearly 200,000-square-foot space into a data center. To clear out the existing attractions, an auction is underway, with the bidding set to conclude on September 24.

Highlighting the auction are the larger items, unaffordable for most, like the famous indoor Ferris wheel, the complete go-kart track, and all accompanying karts. These items, while requiring additional investment in parts, maintenance, and insurance, might appeal to those with substantial financial means or recent lottery winners.

Beyond the Ferris wheel, buyers can consider unusual offerings such as a full bowling alley with complete operational systems, virtual reality racing simulators, and 3D VR roller coasters—though these may pose challenges outside a controlled setting like FunPlex. The theme park’s large multi-level playhouse, with slides and a ball pit, is also up for grabs.

For bidders with more moderate budgets, mid-level items include various arcade games, such as a giant-sized version of Candy Crush for those seeking a unique twist on the classic mobile game. Classic arcade pieces like air hockey tables and basketball pop-a-shot games are also available and are more manageable in size. For children, quarter pony/car ride machines are suitable options, both in terms of safety and size. Additionally, a single go-kart could serve as a decorative piece for enthusiasts.

While some items may primarily appeal to other arcades, child entertainment venues, or aspiring small theme park operators, for many, the auction represents a nostalgic chance to hold onto a tangible piece of their past. Yet, for most, preserving the memories from FunPlex’s years on the West Side may be the most realistic option.
