The International Criminal Court (ICC) denied former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s request for interim release on Oct. 10.

Pre-Trial Chamber I ruled that Duterte poses a significant risk of evading justice and potentially obstructing ongoing proceedings. The Chamber also expressed concern that Duterte could continue committing offenses while awaiting trial.

Duterte, who currently serves as the mayor of Davao City, faces charges connected to his administration’s controversial war on drugs. The ICC’s decision followed a detailed assessment of the risks surrounding his release.

The ruling underscores the gravity of the charges and reaffirms the Court’s commitment to ensuring accountability. Duterte’s legal team has not yet issued a public statement on the matter. The ICC maintains its stance on pursuing justice without compromise.
