AUSTIN, Texas — Huston-Tillotson University announced on September 18, 2025, a $150 million donation from the Moody Foundation in celebration of the university’s 150th anniversary.

The gift marks the largest donation in the history of the historically Black college and university (HBCU), founded in 1875 through the merger of two institutions. University officials said they will use the funds to upgrade campus buildings, improve student housing and academic facilities, and expand scholarship programs.

University President Dr. Melva K. Wallace thanked the Moody Foundation and described the donation as transformative. She said the funding will enhance student experiences and strengthen the university’s mission.

The donation will also support new scholarship initiatives and long-term infrastructure projects. University leaders said they will announce specific plans for the funding in the coming months.

The Moody Foundation, which has supported educational and community development initiatives across Texas, emphasized its continued commitment to higher education.

Huston-Tillotson, affiliated with the United Methodist Church and the United Church of Christ, is a member of the United Negro College Fund.

Students and faculty expressed enthusiasm for the improvements the donation will help bring to the East Austin campus. University officials said the gift will support future generations and address longstanding campus needs.
