<p class="wp-block-paragraph">HOUSTON, Texas — The Filipino community in Houston gathered on Saturday, 13 June 2026, for the <strong>Kalayaan Festival 2026</strong>, marking the 128th anniversary of Philippine Independence through a cultural celebration of heritage and unity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Organized by the <strong>Philippine Consulate General in Houston</strong> in partnership with Philippine Kalayaan Houston (PKH), the event carried the theme <em>“Kalayaan, Kasaysayan, at Kinabukasan”</em>—Freedom, History, and Future.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Held at the <strong>GSH Event Center</strong>, the program featured cultural performances and a community concert highlighting Filipino identity, pride, and heritage.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Organizers described the celebration as both a tribute to the Philippines’ historical struggle for independence and a reaffirmation of unity among Filipinos abroad. Community members attended the event throughout the afternoon, taking part in festivities that emphasized shared history and cultural connection.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The event provided an opportunity to engage with <strong>Gina Ortiz Jones</strong>, as well as representatives from <strong>Communities Aligning Baguio and San Antonio, Texas (CABSAT)</strong> and the <strong>San Antonio Filipino American Chamber of Commerce</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The gathering highlighted the strong people-to-people ties between the <strong>Philippines</strong> and the <strong>United States</strong>, with the Filipino-American community in <strong>San Antonio</strong> serving as a testament to the enduring friendship and cooperation between the two countries.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Through economic partnerships, cultural initiatives, and community engagement, events like San Antonio Days help strengthen bilateral relations and foster greater collaboration between local governments, businesses, and Filipino diaspora organizations.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">MCALLEN, Texas — A six-member team from the Philippine Consulate General in Houston conducted a two-day consular outreach mission on May 16 to 17, 2026, in McAllen, Texas, to provide services to Filipino and Filipino-American residents.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Consul Von Ryan Pangwi led the team, which offered passport processing, citizenship retention and reacquisition, civil registration, notarization, and overseas voter registration services.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The consular team served clients from the Rio Grande Valley as well as from other parts of Texas, including El Paso and Corpus Christi.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The McAllen outreach marked the second consular mission conducted by the Houston consulate in 2026. The consulate said the program aims to bring services closer to Filipinos within its six-state jurisdiction.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Philippine American Chamber of Commerce–Texas Rio Grande Valley Chapter assisted in the event.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">HOUSTON, Texas — The Philippine Consulate General in Houston recently highlighted its engagement with Filipino analog astronaut Kristine Jane Atienza, describing her as a pioneering figure in space nutrition research and the first Filipino analog astronaut.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a social media post dated May 15, 2026, Consul General Gunther Sales said they discussed ways the Philippines could take a more active role in the global space ecosystem during a recent meeting with Atienza.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Atienza shared details of her work in analog space missions and space nutrition, including her participation in the Hawaiʻi Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS), a research program that simulates long-duration space missions in isolated environments.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">She also noted her certification for suborbital spaceflight and her co-founding of the Astronaut Nutrition in Isolated Confined Extreme Environments (ANICE) network, which focuses on developing nutrition systems for astronauts in deep space missions. Her research includes efforts to design Filipino-inspired space food suited for long-duration space travel.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to the consulate, Atienza is set to attend the ASCEND (Accelerating Space Commerce, Exploration, and New Discovery) conference in Washington, D.C. from May 19 to 21, 2026, organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, where global space industry leaders and researchers are expected to gather.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Officials said the engagement reflects growing interest in strengthening Philippine participation in space science, research, and international collaboration in emerging aerospace technologies.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The event included the conferment of the Outstanding Filipino Nurse and Heart of Nursing Awards and the induction of the new PNAMH Executive Board led by President Alex Sardual.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Philippine Consul General Gunther Sales delivered remarks during the program and administered the oath of office to the incoming board members.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Using the gala’s “Ilustrado Inspired” theme, Sales described Filipino nurses as modern-day ilustrados who apply professional knowledge and service in their work. He also noted the role of Filipino nurses in Houston, which is home to the Texas Medical Center, the world’s largest medical complex.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sales said Filipino nurses serve at the center of the U.S. healthcare system and highlighted “malasakit,” or compassion, as a defining characteristic of Filipino nursing.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The Philippines is not a place we leave. It is a place we carry,” Sales said during his remarks.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He also said the Philippine Consulate continues to pursue cooperation between nursing education systems in the Philippines and Texas to support professional exchange and training opportunities in the nursing field.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By joining the directories, organizations can also stay informed about the Consulate’s latest programs, services, and initiatives aimed at supporting Filipino communities in the region.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This marked the Consulate’s first outreach of 2026 and its first visit to the state since 2022, highlighting its commitment to serving underserved Filipino communities.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Consul General Gunther Sales personally administered the oath to the first batch of applicants reclaiming Philippine citizenship under RA 9225. The mission was supported by the Filipino American Cultural Society of Central Mississippi, whose hospitality helped ensure smooth and efficient service delivery.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Consulate expressed its intention to continue bringing essential consular services closer to Filipino communities in the months ahead.</p>
