HOUSTON — Children at Risk, a nonprofit organization, released its annual report ranking Texas schools based on academic performance, highlighting strong results for Houston-area schools across elementary, middle, and high school levels.
In the high school category, three Houston Independent School District (HISD) campuses—Carnegie Vanguard High School, DeBakey High School for Health Professions, and Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts—placed in the state’s top ten. Other top-ranked high schools include the School for the Talented and Gifted and Judge Barefoot Sanders Law Magnet from Dallas ISD, and Westlake Academy Charter School.
Two Houston-area schools ranked in the top ten for middle schools: T.H. Rogers School placed second, and Spring Branch Academic Institute ranked fifth. Elementary schools with strong performance included Mandarin Immersion Magnet School in second place, Memorial Drive Elementary at third, and West University Elementary at fifth. Creekside Forest Elementary from Tomball ISD ranked sixth.
The report also highlighted Gold Ribbon schools for achieving high academic performance in high-poverty communities. Houston ISD had three schools in the top ten for this category: Challenge Early College High School, North Houston Early College High School, and East Early College High School. Other Gold Ribbon high schools in the region include KIPP Houston High School, Blanson CTE High School from Aldine ISD, and Sharpstown International School from Houston ISD.
Children at Risk provided detailed rankings for Houston-area schools. High-performing high schools included Carnegie Vanguard, DeBakey, Kinder, Seven Lakes High School from Katy ISD, Tomball Star Academy from Tomball ISD, Harmony School of Innovation in Sugar Land, and Clear Horizons Early College High School from Clear Creek ISD. Top middle schools included T.H. Rogers, Spring Branch Academic Institute, Fort Settlement Middle School from Fort Bend ISD, Mitchell Intermediate from Conroe ISD, Cornerstone Academy from Spring Branch ISD, Garland McMeans Junior High from Katy ISD, Seven Lakes Junior High from Katy ISD, Collins Intermediate from Conroe ISD, Beckendorff Junior High from Katy ISD, and Young Women’s Leadership Academy from Aldine ISD. Leading elementary schools included Mandarin Immersion Magnet School, Memorial Drive Elementary, West University Elementary, Creekside Forest Elementary, Stafford STEM Magnet Academy from Stafford MSD, Commonwealth Elementary from Fort Bend ISD, Spring Branch Academic Institute, Harmony Science Academy from Sugar Land, Roberts Elementary from Houston ISD, and Stanley C. Stanley Elementary from Katy ISD.
