HOUSTON, Texas — A Galleria-area restaurant owner is calling on the City of Houston to take immediate action after a second fire erupted at a vacant building next to his business Sunday night.
The charred property at 6508 Westheimer, near Voss, sits inches from Stockyard Barbecue, which has operated at the location for 15 years. Owner Louay Joubrani said a narrow 15-inch gap between the buildings, combined with activity at the abandoned site, has created safety concerns for employees and customers.
A homeless camp at the property has also caused repeated incidents, including broken windows and vandalism, Joubrani said. Houston firefighters responded to the Sunday fire, battling large plumes of smoke. No injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation. The first fire at the property last year was ruled arson, and charges were filed.
On Monday, the city posted a notice requiring the property owner to either demolish or secure the structure. Councilmember Mary Nan Huffman said the city has issued multiple citations and emphasized the owner must be held accountable.
Joubrani urged the city to act quickly. “Our neighbors love us, but we cannot fight this battle,” he said.
