HUMBLE, Texas — Harris County plans to build a $13 million precision driving course in Humble to train law enforcement officers and first responders in vehicle operations, with construction potentially starting in November.

The proposed D. R. I. V. E. Center at 2316 Atascocita Road will include a 6,211-square-foot facility and an outdoor driving track, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The project will serve the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office and constable offices in precincts 1 through 8.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office directed Chron to the project website for additional information. The website says Harris County does not currently have a dedicated precision driving course for law enforcement training, despite the amount of time officers and first responders spend in vehicles.

Training at the facility will cover pursuits, felony stops and driving in adverse weather conditions, according to the project website.

The course will include a cone course pad, a simulated urban street driving area, a precision driving track, classrooms and support facilities.

Renderings show a two-story facility with floor-to-ceiling windows, outdoor observation areas, vehicle bays, workstations and wall-mounted display monitors.

Houston-based Kimley-Horn serves as the listed design firm. Project details submitted to the TDLR remain subject to change.

The project will use funding from a voter-approved bond and has an expected completion date in the third quarter of 2027.
