Houston Humane Society asks community to foster pets this holiday season

HOUSTON — The Houston Humane Society is asking residents to provide short-term foster homes for dogs and cats during the holiday season to ease crowding at its shelter and support animals awaiting permanent adoption.

The nonprofit said hundreds of pets currently reside at its Houston facility, and many can benefit from temporary placements in private homes. Holiday fostering allows individuals or families to care for a dog or cat for a few days or weeks without committing to permanent adoption.

Foster and Transport Manager Bree Porter said participants can choose options that fit their schedules, including weekend stays. Time in a foster home helps animals relax, engage in normal routines, and socialize, while staff gather information about their behavior to improve adoption matches.

Porter noted that holiday fostering also gives animals the chance to have high-quality photos and observations shared with potential adopters, increasing the likelihood of permanent placements.

The Houston Humane Society welcomes new foster applicants from across the Houston area and surrounding communities. Interested residents can call 713-433-6421 or email info@houstonhumane.org for details on eligibility and scheduling.

The nonprofit said it plans to continue offering short-term fostering opportunities beyond the holidays, depending on community response and shelter capacity.
