The anticipated October opening of a downtown Houston hotel has been postponed following a significant explosion at the construction site late Thursday morning. The Holiday Inn/Staybridge Suites, a prominent addition to the area in preparation for next summer’s World Cup and the Republican National Convention, suffered major damage that will delay its completion.
According to the Houston Fire Department (HFD), the incident occurred at around 11:08 a.m. when a series of tankless water heaters exploded at the construction site located on Texas Avenue near Austin Street, close to Daikin Park. The blast resulted in six injuries, blew out windows, and caused sections of the exterior walls to bulge outward. Damage assessments by the HFD revealed significant interior destruction and a large hole in the roof.
The 17-story hotel project, consisting of 275 rooms, broke ground in October 2023 and is one of the larger developments in the downtown area. The surge in hotel construction in Houston aligns with the city’s preparations for the influx of visitors expected for major events, including the upcoming World Cup. Commenting on the situation, Jeff Jeffrey of the Houston Business Journal noted, “The timing was initially perfect to align with the World Cup and Republican National Convention.”
Due to the explosion, the hotel’s opening will be delayed by several months. “Investigating the cause, assessing the damage, and navigating the necessary inspections and permitting processes will take time,” Jeffrey explained.
The hotel’s design includes 144 Holiday Inn Express rooms and 131 Staybridge Suites, equipped with full kitchens and living rooms, catering to both business travelers for conventions and leisure travelers attending events like the FIFA World Cup in 2026. Additional amenities feature a rooftop pool, fitness center, a full bar, and a ground-floor grocery store, Urban Street Market, enhancing its appeal to guests and local residents.
Ali Momin, president of Neway Hospitality, emphasized the hotel’s strategic location within walking distance of major attractions such as Minute Maid Park and the George R. Brown Convention Center, offering a significant draw for visitors. “This development was set to be a vital addition to the downtown area,” Momin added, indicating the project’s importance to both tourists and local communities.
