Nearly 500,000 visitors are expected to travel to Houston during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the city prepares to host seven matches and a major fan festival over a 39-day period.
The global football tournament, which will feature 48 teams competing across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, includes matches at Houston’s NRG Stadium and a fan festival in the city’s East Downtown area, known as EaDo. Houston is one of 16 host cities for the expanded tournament.
Organizers confirmed that NRG Stadium will host five group-stage matches and two knockout-round games. The Houston World Cup Host Committee is coordinating with FIFA and local officials to ensure logistical readiness, including infrastructure improvements, crowd control, and security planning.
The FIFA Fan Festival, a free-entry event established by FIFA in 2006, will serve as the central gathering space for fans. The EaDo venue will feature live broadcasts of all tournament matches, interactive exhibits, cultural performances, and international food vendors. Local artists and businesses are expected to participate, providing a showcase of Houston’s diverse community.
City leaders anticipate a significant economic impact from the tournament. Hospitality, retail, and transportation sectors are projected to benefit from increased visitor spending throughout the month-long event.
Officials are developing expanded public transit services and traffic management plans to accommodate the influx of international and domestic fans. Efforts are also underway to enhance public safety and ensure smooth operations during the tournament.
The World Cup will begin on June 11, 2026, and conclude with the final match on July 19. Houston’s inclusion in the host city lineup follows years of planning and preparation by local stakeholders.
