HOUSTON, Texas — U.S. Congressman Al Green announced on Friday that he is considering legal action and potential impeachment proceedings against Governor Greg Abbott over a proposed redistricting plan set to be addressed during Texas’s upcoming special legislative session.

The plan, introduced by Governor Abbott as part of his legislative priorities, proposes mid-decade changes to Texas’s congressional map.

Green, a Democrat representing Texas’s 9th Congressional District, criticized the proposal, arguing it undermines fair representation and targets Democratic strongholds.

“This is an attempt to dilute the voice of voters in historically underrepresented communities,” Green said during a press conference.

Governor Abbott, a Republican, has defended the proposal, citing demographic shifts and the need for updated district lines. His office has not yet responded to Green’s threats of litigation or impeachment.

The redistricting plan has drawn opposition from several Democratic leaders, who accuse the governor of partisan gerrymandering.

If enacted, the changes could significantly alter electoral dynamics in some of the state’s most densely populated areas.

Legal experts are watching the developments closely, citing potential constitutional challenges related to voting rights and equal representation.

The special session, set to begin next week, will include public hearings on the redistricting proposal. Both supporters and opponents are expected to present testimony. Stakeholders anticipate a legal battle if the legislature advances the proposed changes.

Green emphasized his commitment to protecting democratic processes. “If necessary, I will file suit to stop this injustice,” he said. “If necessary, I will pursue articles of impeachment.”
