HOUSTON, Texas– A building located at the intersection of Elgin and Ennis streets in Houston’s Third Ward was demolished on May 21, 2025.
The structure had become a notable community landmark due to a mural honoring George Floyd, who was killed by police in Minneapolis in 2020.
The mural, painted on the building’s southeast wall, also included the names of Breonna Taylor and Sandra Bland—both of whom became symbols in the national conversation about police violence and racial injustice.
The demolition occurred just days before the fifth anniversary of Floyd’s death, a date that has been marked by vigils and commemorations nationwide.
The specific reasons for the building’s demolition have not been publicly confirmed.
City officials and the property owner have not yet issued formal statements regarding the future of the site.
