HOUSTON — Houston avoided the worst of last weekend’s winter storm, but the National Weather Service (NWS) is warning residents that freezing temperatures are expected to return this weekend.
A freeze watch is in effect from Saturday evening through Sunday morning, with lows forecasted between 18 and 32 degrees. Wind chills could drop as low as 13 degrees Saturday morning, and a cold weather advisory is in effect Friday morning, NWS meteorologist Bradley Brokamp said. Officials noted a hard freeze is possible Sunday morning.
In response, the City of Houston is opening 12 warming centers beginning at 5 p.m. Friday to provide relief for residents. The centers are located across the city, including in Acres Homes, Denver Harbor, Fifth Ward, Kashmere, Magnolia, Moody, Northeast, Southwest, Sunnyside, Third Ward, and Fonde neighborhoods.
Temperatures Friday night are expected to drop into the mid-30s, and city officials have not yet specified how long the warming centers will remain open. Residents are advised to stay informed of local forecasts and take precautions against the cold.
