Houston billionaire Dan Friedkin, known for his ventures in automotive, luxury hospitality, and entertainment, is now setting his sights on the American sports scene, aspiring to join the ranks of renowned Houston sports owners Jim Crane, Tilman Fertitta, and Cal McNair. Already holding significant stakes in European soccer clubs Everton FC and AS Roma, Friedkin’s ambitions have shifted to acquiring a major U.S. franchise. Earlier attempts to purchase the NBA’s Boston Celtics fell through when the team was sold in March for over $6 billion to a group led by Bill Chisholm.
With the NBA opportunity closed, Friedkin and The Friedkin Group have emerged as leading candidates to potentially bring an NHL franchise to Houston, though no official plans have been confirmed since initial discussions emerged in March. In preparation for future opportunities, The Friedkin Group recently unveiled Pursuit Sports, a new venture aimed at managing sports-related investments, under the continued leadership of CEO Dave Beeston, whose experience includes high-profile acquisitions with Fenway Sports Group and Clearlake Capital Group.
Friedkin’s initiatives could significantly impact Houston’s sports landscape, currently dominated by long-established names. A successful bid to secure an NHL or WNBA team could elevate Friedkin’s status in the city, revitalizing interest in sports and entertainment. The potential to reintroduce franchises like the Houston Comets or establish new teams could fill existing gaps in the local sports market, especially with the WNBA and NHL’s limited presence in Texas.
As expansion prospects for the WNBA include a possible move for the struggling Connecticut Sun, and given recent league growth in other U.S. cities, Houston appears poised for consideration. Similarly, the NHL’s singular Texas team, the Dallas Stars, presents an opportunity for Friedkin to make a compelling case against rival cities like Atlanta and Indianapolis. As Friedkin’s strategic moves unfold, it seems increasingly likely that Houston’s sports sphere will soon experience significant developments.
