MANILA, Philippines– The House of Representatives has passed House Bill No. 11229, known as the Commemoration of Filipino Sports Heroes Act, which allows Filipino athletes to be interred at Libingan ng mga Bayani, a cemetery traditionally reserved for the country’s most distinguished individuals.

The bill was approved by 196 lawmakers during a plenary session.

Libingan ng mga Bayani, located in Taguig City, is historically the resting place for Presidents, military leaders, soldiers, and national heroes.

The newly passed bill expands this honor to include athletes who have achieved significant success in sports and represented the Philippines internationally.

The bill defines “Filipino sports heroes” as athletes who have won medals in the Olympics, Paralympics, or World Championships recognized by international sports governing bodies.

To qualify, athletes must also have good moral character and integrity. The bill further includes Filipino athletes, coaches, or trainers inducted into the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame as eligible individuals.

Isabela Representative Faustino Michael Carlos Dy III, who sponsored the bill, emphasized the role of sports figures in inspiring the youth and bringing pride to the nation. He referred to these athletes as “modern heroes” for their ability to unite Filipinos.

A screening committee, headed by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), will be responsible for determining and recommending eligible individuals for interment at Libingan ng mga Bayani. Only those meeting the established criteria will be considered for this honor.

The passage of the bill aims to recognize the contributions of Filipino sports champions and immortalize their achievements, acknowledging their impact on the nation’s pride and global recognition.

The bill also highlights the importance of sports in shaping national identity and culture.
