Senator Hontiveros Opposes OVP Budget Increase

Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros, during the Kapihan sa Senado forum at the Senate, expressed her readiness to oppose the proposed 2025 budget increase for the Office of the Vice President, arguing that the current P733.1 million allocation is sufficient and any increase would need a compelling justification.

Hontiveros’ stance on the OVP’s budget comes amid ongoing debates over government spending and fiscal responsibility. Hontiveros questioned the need for additional funding and highlighted the importance of prioritizing essential services and projects. According to her, the present allocation should be used efficiently before seeking more funds from the government.

The budget proposal for the OVP has been a topic of discussion not only within the Senate but also among different political groups and organizations. Some lawmakers have expressed support for increasing the budget, arguing that it would allow the Vice President’s office to enhance its programs and projects. These lawmakers point to the potential benefits of expanding social services and outreach initiatives as reasons for the proposed increase.

On the other hand, critics like Hontiveros caution against allocating more resources without clear justification and transparency about how the additional funds would be used. Many are concerned about the broader implications of increasing government spending without specific objectives or accountability measures in place.

The OVP budget proposal falls within a broader context of fiscal policies being debated by the government. With various departments vying for increased allocations, the discussions have highlighted the need for strategic planning and careful assessment of priorities. The push for additional funding often reflects competing interests and aspirations of different offices and sectors within the government.

Vice President Sara Duterte’s office has not publicly responded to Hontiveros’ comments at this time. However, supporters of the budget increase have indicated that investments in the OVP would support initiatives that align with the current administration’s goals, including poverty reduction and community development programs.

Hontiveros’ firm stance on the matter reflects her broader approach to governance, where accountability and prudent use of resources play central roles. She remains committed to scrutinizing budget proposals to ensure they fulfill national interests and contribute positively to the country’s development.
