Austin, Texas, recorded 66 homicides in 2023, maintaining the same number as 2022. This marks a decrease from the peak of 88 homicides in 2021.

While the number of homicides has remained steady over the past two years, it is still higher than pre-pandemic levels.

Law enforcement attributes the decrease in homicides to a combination of increased community policing efforts and strategic resource deployments.

The Austin Police Department (APD) has focused on reducing violent crime through targeted interventions. City officials have worked with community leaders to address the root causes of violence and promote safer neighborhoods.

Despite the decrease in homicides, other crime categories, such as auto thefts, have increased. Local authorities are continuing to implement comprehensive crime prevention strategies to address these challenges.

In addition to crime reduction efforts, community leaders have supported crime prevention programs, including neighborhood watch initiatives, and promoted cooperation between residents and law enforcement.

The APD has also used technology, including crime mapping and analytics, to identify crime hotspots and deploy officers accordingly. This data-driven approach has helped law enforcement respond more effectively to emerging threats.

While homicides have decreased, other crime concerns remain. City officials continue to focus on enhancing public safety through various initiatives aimed at addressing crime trends and ensuring security in Austin.
