In the rapidly modernizing landscape of Austin, Texas, where tech startups and contemporary architecture dominate, a significant slice of history is now available for purchase. The iconic estate at 400 Academy Drive, affectionately known as “The Academy” or “The Howling House,” has been listed for sale at $8.9 million by Kathryn Scarborough Real Estate. Situated in the heart of Travis Heights’ historic Fairview Park, the 1889 property stands as a testament to Austin’s rich past amidst its swift evolution into a tech hub.

Commissioned by Myron D. Mather, who once led Austin Water, Light & Power Co., the home boasts a construction history tied to the Texas State Capitol, utilizing leftover pink granite for its structure. Over the years, this three-story residence has served various roles, including a military academy and a doctor’s office, and is steeped in local lore, with tales of ghostly howls attributed to the wind finding its way through the door seals.

The Mather-Kirkland House is more than just a historical gem; it offers sweeping city views from its rooftop belvedere and features five bedrooms and three and a half baths. Inside, the residence is adorned with longleaf pine floors, hand-carved cypress doors, and original Victorian elements such as window latches and intricately tiled fireplaces. These features encapsulate stories and craftsmanship from a bygone era.

Despite its age, the home is not merely a relic. It has been meticulously restored over forty years by the late Claudette and Hugh Lowe, who modernized essentials such as plumbing and electrical systems while maintaining the home’s historic character. Energy-efficient updates ensure that this residence meets contemporary living standards without sacrificing its aesthetic integrity.

Significantly, the property was once owned by Texas novelist Elithe Kirkland and has been showcased on Preservation Austin’s Historic Homes Tour, where it captivated visitors with its Art Deco lighting and stained-glass windows. For potential buyers seeking additional space, the adjacent duplex at 316 Le Grande Avenue is also available, offering an expansive opportunity to own a piece of Austin’s storied heritage.

In an era where the new often overshadows the old, 400 Academy Drive is a poignant reminder of the irreplaceable value found in historic preservation. As this landmark home enters the market, it invites future owners to contribute to its enduring legacy.
