Herb Sheaner, a World War II veteran and former Jesuit Dallas track coach, recently marked his 101st birthday at his home in Dallas, Texas.
The August 12 celebration was attended by family and friends and included shared stories, cake, and pizza.
Sheaner is recognized both for his military service and his long career in athletics. A decorated veteran, he served during World War II and was held as a prisoner of war during the Battle of the Bulge.
Following his return, he became a coach at Jesuit Dallas, where he mentored student-athletes over several decades.
Known for his dedication and influence, Sheaner is respected by former students and community members alike. His coaching career left a lasting impact, and many former athletes have credited him with helping shape their lives.
At the gathering, Sheaner reflected briefly on his life, saying, “I’ve had a good life. And I still do.” Attendees highlighted his resilience, leadership, and contributions both in military and educational settings.
Sheaner’s 101st birthday served as a moment to honor not just his longevity, but also a life marked by service, mentorship, and commitment to community.
