This figure marks a decrease from the previous year, 2023, when at least 19 individuals died within the jail. The peak in recent years was in 2022, with 27 deaths, representing the highest number in nearly two decades, according to county records and data from the Texas Justice Initiative.
The latest inspection arose in response to a specific incident reported by jail officials. The failure to conduct face-to-face observations contributed to the death of an inmate.
