Harris County Democrats call out Mayor Whitmire, hold off on endorsement

The Harris County Democratic Party on Monday passed a resolution reprimanding Houston Mayor John Whitmire, barring him from receiving the party’s endorsement in future elections, in response to his attendance at a Republican fundraiser for U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales in 2023.

Party officials said the resolution, introduced by progressive activists, received sufficient support from voting members to take effect immediately and apply to Whitmire’s future campaigns.

Whitmire, who won the Houston mayoral runoff in December 2023 with Democratic backing, faces the formal censure during his first year in office. The resolution does not remove him from office or prevent him from running as a Democrat but restricts his access to party endorsements and institutional support.
