HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Harris County commissioners voted Tuesday to proceed with selected flood mitigation projects despite a $1 billion shortfall in the county’s $2.5 billion flood bond program.

Voters approved the flood bond initiative in 2018 following the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey. The program aims to improve drainage and flood infrastructure across Harris County to reduce future flood risks.

Commissioners said partnerships that bring additional funding will protect the approved projects from budget cuts tied to the shortfall. County officials emphasized the importance of continuing work to safeguard communities against future flooding disasters.

Harris County is actively seeking federal, state, and alternative funding sources to close the budget gap and complete all planned flood mitigation efforts. The Harris County Flood Control District oversees the implementation and coordinates with other agencies to ensure progress.

Officials pledged transparency with residents regarding the status of projects and any program adjustments. They encouraged public participation in meetings to provide input on flood prevention strategies.
