George Raveling, the Hall of Fame basketball coach whose influence helped Michael Jordan sign a landmark endorsement deal with Nike, has died at 88, his family announced Tuesday.

Raveling’s family said in a statement that he had “faced cancer with courage and grace,” adding, “He will be profoundly missed, yet his aura, energy, divine presence, and timeless wisdom live on in all those he touched and transformed.”

Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015, Raveling posted a 335-293 coaching record from 1972 to 1994 at Washington State, Iowa and Southern California. Despite slow starts at each school, he led multiple teams to the NCAA Tournament and earned spots on the U.S. Olympic basketball staffs in 1984 and 1988.

At the 1984 Los Angeles Games, Raveling helped introduce Jordan to Nike’s Sonny Vaccaro, paving the way for the Air Jordan brand that transformed the athlete’s career and the global sports apparel industry. Jordan later credited Raveling directly, saying, “I signed with Nike because of George, and without him, there would be no Air Jordan.” Actor Marlon Wayans portrayed him in the 2023 film Air about Nike’s pursuit of Jordan.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver remembered Raveling as “a pioneering force” who broke barriers as a college coach and “led with poise, dignity and respect.” Beyond coaching, Raveling also made history off the court: while working security at the 1963 March on Washington, he asked Martin Luther King Jr. for the copy of his “I Have a Dream” speech. King handed it to him, and Raveling safeguarded it until donating it to Villanova University, his alma mater, in 2021.

A standout forward at Villanova from 1957 to 1960, Raveling averaged 12.3 points and 14.6 rebounds over his final two seasons. Drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors, he never played in the NBA but remained deeply connected to the game and to Villanova. Former coach Jay Wright called him “the finest human being, inspiring mentor, most loyal alum and a thoughtful loving friend,” while current coach Kevin Willard praised “the enormous impact Coach has made not just on our game, but on so many of us in it.”
