Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to remove political and ideological road markings across the state.

The directive, issued on October 8, 2025, requires cities and counties to eliminate markings such as rainbow crosswalks, murals, and other colored roadway designs within 30 days. Noncompliance may result in the loss of state transportation funding.

Abbott’s office said the order aligns with federal and state roadway safety guidelines aimed at reducing distractions for drivers. The directive follows similar initiatives under the Trump administration that focused on maintaining uniform road markings.

Legal expert Joe Hoelscher said the order covers a range of roadway art beyond rainbow crosswalks. He noted that while few legal challenges are expected, the order raises questions about free speech rights.

City officials in Austin and Dallas expressed concern over the directive’s impact on public art and community identity. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said the city is exploring alternative ways to promote diversity. Some Dallas leaders criticized the order, arguing that crosswalk art contributes to local culture and inclusion.
