Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Monday directed state agencies to begin clearing homeless encampments in Austin, citing escalating public safety concerns, including reports of weapons, needles and other hazardous debris.

State-led teams removed 48 encampments and more than 3,000 pounds of debris.

Authorities made several arrests, including 24 repeat felony offenders and individuals with outstanding warrants. Illegal drugs, firearms and drug paraphernalia were also seized during the operation.

Abbott said the effort was launched to clean city streets and protect communities and state-owned properties, following complaints over deteriorating conditions in public spaces.

The Texas Department of Public Safety and other agencies led the cleanup in coordination with Austin officials.
