The San Antonio Zoo will open its new Congo Falls gorilla habitat to the public this weekend, marking the return of gorillas to the zoo after several years.
Zoo officials describe the exhibit as featuring the world’s tallest gorilla tower, created as the centerpiece of an immersive, multi-level habitat.
Visitors will view the gorillas through glass panels and elevated walkways positioned around the habitat. Congo Falls incorporates naturalistic landscaping such as trees, rocks, and water features, with spaces that allow the animals to shift between open areas, higher platforms, and secluded zones.
Animal care staff plan to monitor how the gorillas use the space and adjust enrichment items and feeding locations as needed. Veterinary teams completed health checks and quarantine procedures before the animals moved into the exhibit, following guidelines from accredited zoological and conservation organizations.
Congo Falls will also serve as an educational venue. Interpretive signs, digital displays, and scheduled talks will present information about gorilla biology, family structure, diet, and conservation challenges, including habitat loss and poaching. The zoo intends to link the exhibit to broader conservation initiatives focused on great ape protection in Africa.
Zoo officials expect increased attendance during the opening weekend. Access to Congo Falls is included in standard admission, and security teams prepared crowd management plans for the launch period.
Construction materials for the tower and habitat were selected to withstand San Antonio’s weather conditions, and maintenance crews will conduct regular inspections.
