MANILA, Philippines — The Gilas Pilipinas women U18 team showcased an overwhelming display of basketball prowess as they crushed the Maldives 141-18 in their opening game of the 2024 FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup Division B in China on Monday.

Aiming for promotion to Division A, the Filipina ballers left no room for their opponents, limiting the Maldives to a mere seven points over the last three quarters of the game.

Despite conceding 11 points in the first quarter, Gilas established a commanding lead at 43-11. Their defense tightened significantly in the subsequent quarters, culminating in an extraordinary third quarter where the Maldives managed to score just one point.

All Gilas players contributed at least five points in the dominant victory. Filipino-Australian Jolzene Impreso and homegrown talent Alicia Villanueva led the scoring, each matching the Maldives’ total with 18 points. Gabby Ramos recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while team captain Ava Fajardo delivered an all-around performance with 13 points, six rebounds, seven assists, and four steals.

Riding high on this emphatic win, the Philippines will next face Lebanon on Tuesday, June 25. Gilas Pilipinas must win the tournament to secure promotion to Division A.
