Gilas Pilipinas advances to 2nd round despite loss to Australia

MANILA, Philippines — Gilas Pilipinas suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Australia, 93-66, in the second window of the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers at Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday.

The game was close in the first half, with Gilas trailing by just five points at halftime, 38-33. But Australia pulled away in the third quarter, opening with a 14-7 run capped by a Nick Kay basket that extended the Boomers’ lead to 52-40. By the end of the quarter, Australia led 68-53, and the margin only widened in the final frame, with Tom Wilson hitting a triple to push the lead to 88-59 with less than three minutes remaining.

Justin Brownlee led Gilas with 20 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, while Quentin Millora-Brown contributed 11 points and seven rebounds. Despite their efforts, the team could not keep pace with the Australians.

Elijah Pepper starred for Australia with a game-high 28 points and seven rebounds, supported by Tanner Krebs and Mitch Creek, who added 18 and 13 points, respectively.

Gilas Pilipinas falls to 2-2 in Group A, while Australia improves to 4-0.
