HOUSTON, Texas– George Foreman, the former heavyweight boxing champion from Houston, has passed away at 76. His death was confirmed late on Friday night.
Foreman gained national fame after winning a gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.
He went on to win the World Heavyweight Championship in 1973, defeating Joe Frazier by second-round knockout.
However, his career faced a major setback in 1974 when he lost to Muhammad Ali in the iconic “Rumble in the Jungle.”
Despite this, Foreman made an incredible comeback in 1994 at age 45, becoming the oldest fighter to win the World Heavyweight Championship by defeating Michael Moorer.
Outside of boxing, Foreman became a successful entrepreneur, most notably with the George Foreman Grill, a product that became a household staple and solidified his business success.
Foreman is remembered for his contributions to both boxing and business, as well as his inspiring story of resilience and reinvention. He is survived by his five sons and five daughters.
