Bexar County offers free rabies shots after 2 foxes test positive

Bexar County Animal Care will hold a free rabies vaccination clinic for residents on Saturday following the discovery of two foxes that tested positive for rabies within a week.

The clinic will take place at the Bexar-Bulverde Fire Department on Bulverde Road from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Vaccines will be available for 100 pets, with a limit of two pets per household.

The initiative aims to control the rise in rabies cases and promote responsible pet ownership. State law requires all pets to be vaccinated against rabies to prevent transmission of the disease.

Bexar County Animal Care urged residents to participate in the vaccination drive to help protect both pets and people. Organizers advised pet owners to arrive early due to the limited number of available vaccines.

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system and is transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. Without treatment, the infection is fatal.

Officials said the free vaccination effort is part of the county’s broader public health strategy to address the recent increase in rabies cases. Bexar County continues to coordinate with veterinarians to monitor and contain the disease.

Residents can contact Bexar County Animal Care for more information about the clinic and other pet health programs.
