FORT WORTH, Texas — The Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) approved a new cell phone policy, in compliance with a Texas law restricting cellphone use by students during school hours.
The policy mandates that students turn off and store personal communication devices, including cell phones, smartwatches, and tablets, throughout the school day.
The Texas law, effective Sept. 1, requires public schools to ban cell phone use during instructional hours to reduce distractions and improve student focus. State officials believe the regulation will enhance academic performance by minimizing disruptions in classrooms.
The district plans to educate students and parents about the new policy through informational sessions and written materials. Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about the importance of staying focused during school hours.
Other school districts in North Texas are also preparing to implement the law, with many adopting similar policies. The state mandate has sparked discussions about balancing technology use with academic priorities.
