Kamala Harris says no to 2026 run for California governor

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has confirmed she will not run for governor of California in 2026, ending months of speculation about her political future following her 2024 presidential loss to Donald Trump.

In her announcement, Harris expressed continued affection for California and reiterated her commitment to public service but said she would not participate in the upcoming gubernatorial election.

She also indicated a willingness to engage in civic life through other avenues, signaling no immediate plans for elected office.

Harris’s decision removes a major potential contender from the field. With Governor Gavin Newsom term-limited, the 2026 race is expected to draw interest, particularly among Democrats. Harris, who previously served as California’s Attorney General and U.S. Senator, had long been seen as a possible frontrunner if she chose to run.

Her choice not to enter the race shifts attention to other potential Democratic candidates and opens the door for new figures to emerge.

Despite stepping back from this gubernatorial contest, Harris has not ruled out a future presidential run, keeping her national political profile intact.
